By now we know that the media and marketing landscape is quickly evolving from what it was only about 5-10 years ago. Current business leaders are quickly adopting new methods of marketing themselves and their businesses but many are still confused as to why they really need to do this. All they really know is that they have to. It is also safe to say that most of these current business leaders are of an older demographic that ranges from ages 30 and above. So to cut to the chase, the reason these business leaders need to adopt digital media strategies is for the simple fact that the next generation of consumers are quickly maturing and future generations will likely continue on the same course of media consumption. People born after 1990 have never really known a world without the internet, cell phones or digital media. This age group relies on digital media more so than any other age group. They consume gigantic amounts of information because it is readily assessable at their finger tips and in easy to understand formats. Now, this is not to say that all the information they gather on the internet is completely accurate or true (wikipedia anyone?) but the mere fact that they consume so much media is an important point that marketing managers must note.

Google It!

These young kids are very tech savvy and can’t seem to live without the internet but guess what? These kids aren’t really kids anymore! IF you were born in 1990 you are now 23 years old, you are likely out of college and starting to make money in your new career OR struggling to find a full time work but you are likely out on your own making purchasing decisions and trying to make something of yourself. As an internet native what would drive your purchasing decisions? Would you be influenced by a tv commercial or a commercial on youtube? Are you going to make a decision to buy a car based off of a newspaper ad or an ad on your favorite website? Many college aged people find the news to be “garbage and lies” according to a University of Texas study (http://goo.gl/BvDDN) so why would they pay attention to what those programs or publications promote during the commercial breaks? There are also some studies which suggest that people from the ages of 13-18 don’t really know how to use the internet to it’s full advantage and that they don’t know how to properly use google. While this may be true I can tell you that many do know how to use the internet very well and those that might not be so savvy on Google are actually probably very savvy or at least so addicted to social networks or their cellphones that they eventually become experts. One thing is for certain, these internet natives have more conversations about and around media, of all types, than their older peers

Young internet natives devour media both new and old.

While you might think that your teenage son or daughter is becoming anti-social because of the web you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that many actually prefer face-to-face interaction (unless they play world of warcraft) to that of online interaction. This means that when they see an interesting ad on Youtube or a website they are more likely to talk about it with their friends, effectively applying the tried and true method of word of mouth marketing. The new generation of digital natives have a different learning style than even my generation who relied on books, wikipedia and the fabled library (we all know most college kids these days usually end up watching a Game of Thrones Marathon in the library anyways). The so called digital natives demand in your face media that can hold their attention in the world of information overload. I personally don’t see this changing but why should it really? It might make some old school marketers confused and angry that these “young-ins” are not responding as well to newspaper or television ads but it should force some long overdue innovation amongst these marketers. The companies that adapt and excel in this form of marketing will eventually come out on top. It will force old, haggard, companies out of the market and allow new, innovative and fresh companies to enter. It is not easy to adapt to this new strategy but it will benefit you and your business massively.

While you cannot find everything on the internet you can come pretty darn close.

These youtube channels epitomize the kind of learning style that internet natives are accustomed to because they make the topics and concepts extremely interesting. Go ahead, take a look. I’m sure you will find something you don’t know on one of these channels: VSauce, Minute Earth, and Minute Physics. This one is more for fun: Buzzfeed.
