To hear more of DJ’s insights into marketing, and for a chance to ask questions, please join us for the upcoming September 2 Java Talk: Web Marketing Synergy with a Synergistic Duo.

DJ Heckes, CEO and founder of EXHIB-IT! Tradeshow Marketing Experts, an Albuquerque small business, was the featured speaker at a recent NMAMA Lunch & Learn on May 20, 2010. For those of you who missed the talk, or for those who would like to learn more about DJ’s concepts, DJ was featured recently in the AMA’s podcast series, interviewed by David Kinard.

Listen to the AMA podcast featuring DJ and Full Brain Marketing.

Gene Grant, co-host of KNME’s New Mexico in Focus, interviewed DJ for the NMAMA luncheon. DJ proved to be concise and insightful, helping her audience to get their arms around big concepts or unwieldy and daunting tasks with common sense and a helpful and practical take on small business marketing. For instance, she explained that she used Twitter as B->C (helping her followers keep up with her business), Linked In as B->B contact, and she reserved Facebook for personal news about herself and her family. She noted that she also used Twitter as a quick and knowledgeable resource to research her own questions — for instance, when she found a publisher for her book within 72 hours. It was a stimulating and productive session! When RJ of Adelante asked how one could make paper shredding exciting enough to post to the world, DJ pointed out that what can happen when you don’t shred was a little too exciting … and to talk about that.

DJ wrote her recently published book, Full Brain Marketing, to provide a clear guide for small business owners in putting together their own marketing plan. Full Brain Marketing explains that if done properly, marketing can be accomplished more easily and with a far greater rate of success. DJ wrote Full Brain Marketing as the result of successfully steering her then one-year-old company through the dot com crash and the 9/11 fallout. DJ Heckes grew her company in the wake of disaster when many in her industry closed their doors. Her company reached a peak when it grew 108% in the span of two years. Click here to learn more about Full Brain Marketing.

James Martinez, immediate past President of the NMAMA, had a vision for his term. He cared about leaving a legacy, and raised the bar for the professionalism of the organization and the quality of events. He accomplished much of this through the generous support provided to NMAMA by his company, FASTSIGNS® On The Two.

Attractive vertical displays, exhibit backdrops, and high quality signage all add to the cachet and ambiance of NMAMA events and at public appearances. His magnanimous sponsorship was very evident at the 2009 Marketer of the Year Awards (held on April 15, 2010), where his company’s products graced the main stage, welcomed attendees and raffle players, and were even awarded as plaques to the Award of Merit winners.

In fact, the Compass Award itself was conceived and accomplished as a project during his tenure as President. The elegant Compass Award is an original design commissioned exclusively for the NMAMA, created by New Mexico artist Wendell W. Unzicker.

An even more significant example of James’ vision was the new logo and branding created for the NMAMA. In 2008, the Board of Directors, led by then-President James Martinez, decided it was time that the NMAMA update its look. Tangerine Café was selected from a group of five potential candidates to develop the new logo and collateral. A re-branding committee, which was comprised of board and committee members as well as members-at-large, was assembled to select the creative firm and approve the final designs.

The NMAMA unveiled its new logo on Thursday, January 15, 2009. Its new brand identity represented a significant milestone in the organization’s history, and marks the organization’s evolution into a flourishing center for community, resources and education.

In addition to his leadership, James is a very generous and active sponsor of NMAMA. His efforts have contributed greatly to the NMAMA’s presence and credibility as a leader on the marketing scene in Albuquerque. Thank you, James Martinez and FASTSIGNS® On The Two!
